Mets 7, Yankees 6: Niese Hit Hard, Ike Goes Yard

Presswire

Ike Davis hit a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in front of a record crowd of 7,644 at Digital Domain Park today. He covered for Jon Niese, who was rocked for five runs on eight hits in just 1.2 innings in relief of a strong Mike Pelfrey. Niese worked a scoreless fifth inning but couldn't make it through the sixth. He is expected to start Sunday against Mike Minor and the Braves.

Pelfrey struck out five(!) and issued no walks in four innings pitched, allowing one run on a Nick Swisher home run. That makes two strong starts in a row to finish spring training. He will face Edwin Jackson and the Nationals on Monday at Citi Field.

Ike's homer capped a 13-hit, 4-walk performance by the Mets' offense. Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Lucas Duda, and Josh Thole each had two hits. Andres Torres played in his first Grapefruit League game since March 20th, going 1-for-1 with a hit-by-pitch. Tim Byrdak also returned from injury, tossing a perfect inning with one strikeout. The Mets wrap up spring training tomorrow against the Yankees in Tampa. The game is at 12:05pm and will be on YES and WFAN.
