The Mets have placed Ronny Cedeno on the disabled list, retroactive to May 27, with a strained left calf. The team has recalled Jordany Valdespin from Buffalo for the third time this season.
Valdespin was first recalled on April 23 when Cedeno was originally placed on the disabled list. He was optioned back to Buffalo on May 6, but he returned to the Mets the very next day after Ruben Tejada hit the disabled list. Cedeno returned on May 11, and eight days later, Valdespin was sent back to Buffalo.
In 78 plate appearances with the Mets this year, Cedeno is hitting .231/.351/.308. Valdespin is hitting just .100/.143/.250 in 21 plate appearances with the Mets, but he's hit .279/.318/.404 in 110 plate appearances, a much larger sample, with Buffalo.
In short, Mets shortstops are dropping like flies. For now, Omar Quintanilla will probably get the majority of playing time at short since Valdespin's a defensive liability at the position.
