The Mets had every opportunity to beat the Yankees and avoid a sweep this afternoon, but they failed to hold on a late lead and lost on a walk-off home run by Russell Martin in the ninth inning. The Mets took an early three-run lead in the second inning but failed to add more runs with the bases loaded and just one out in the inning.
The Yankees scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth to take the lead, but the Mets knotted the game in the ninth. Once again, they squandered an opportunity to score more with runners on the corners and one out, and Martin's game-ending home run against Jon Rauch happened in the blink of an eye in the bottom of the ninth.
We knew it was over when...
The Mets failed to take the lead in the ninth inning. Between the team's defense and bullpen lately, there seemed to be no way the Mets would even get to extra innings.
What else?
This series was just the second time that the Mets were swept in the Bronx. The other sweep occurred in 2003. If there's a silver lining here, Jon Niese pitched seven great innings. The only two runs he allowed were unearned.
