In his pre-game press conference this afternoon, Mets manager Terry Collins updated the media on the injury statuses Jason Bay, Ronny Cedeno, and Ruben Tejada.
Jason Bay: Bay was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list earlier today following his collision with the left field wall during last night's game against the Reds at Citi Field. The 7-day DL was created last season to allow teams to more easily and appropriately deal with concussions. Perhaps counter-intuitively, the 15-day disabled list was actually less protective of concussed players as teams were more reluctant to take them off the active roster for two full weeks while they ascertained the extent of the injury. As a result, some concussed players may have returned to action sooner than they should have, risking further — and perhaps more serious — brain damage in the process The 7-day DL affords teams an optionally shorter time frame to perform medical evaluations without having to choose between no DL time and possibly too much.
With respect to Bay, Collins isn't optimistic that seven days will be sufficient, especially considering this isn't Bay's first concussion. The Mets are going to take their time with this one.
Ronny Cedeno: Collins hopes Cedeno, who has been on the DL since May 27 with a strained left calf, will be back by mid-week. Cedeno has played one rehab game with Triple-A Buffalo.
Ruben Tejada: Collins expects Tejada, who has been on the DL since May 7 with a strained right quad, to begin playing rehab games on Monday.
