R.A. Dickey threw his second consecutive complete-game, one-hit shutout against the Orioles this evneing. He struck out thirteen, a new career high, and walked just two. There is no pitcher in baseball that I would rather watch or have pitching for the Mets in a must-win game. He should be named the National League's starting pitcher for the All Star Game immediately.
Jake Arrieta kept the Mets off the board through five innings. But with two outs in the sixth, Ike Davis, who has looked much better lately, hit the first grand slam of his career to break the game open. In the eighth, the Mets added an insurance run on a David Wright single.
We knew it was over when...
Davis hit his grand slam. It was virtually over when Dickey took the mound, but until then, it looked like Arrieta might keep pace with the best pitcher in baseball.
What else?
- Davis has a nine-game hitting streak.
- Jordany Valdespin hit a double and a triple and scored two runs in the game.
- R.A. Dickey.
