Jon Niese wasn't able to join Johan Santana and R.A. Dickey in throwing a complete-game shutout against the Cardinals this weekend, but he pitched six scoreless innings of his own this evening. Niese set a career high with 10 strikeouts, and he issued just 1 walk.
The top of the order led the way for the Mets' offense in the victory. Kirk Nieuwenhuis was 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBI, and Andres Torres went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI of his own.
We knew it was over when...
The Mets scored three in the bottom of the sixth inning. Even though Niese had been pinch hit for in the inning, the six-run lead was safe even for the Mets' bullpen.
What else?
With Jason Bay's return looming, it is still very possible that the Mets send Ike Davis to Buffalo. With an 0-for-4 night, Ike is now hitting .166/.230/.284 on the season. Oh and the Mets are in a three-way tie for last first.
