2012 MLB Draft: Mets Select SS Gavin Cecchini 12th Overall

With their first pick in the 2012 draft, the Mets took Barbe H.S. shortstop Gavin Cecchini with the 12th overall pick. A lot of people seem to be down on Cecchini because he's not a sexy, high upside kind of pick. But the simple fact of the matter is this: shortstops who can hit even a little don't grow on trees, and Cecchini can do both. On top of that, he's got great makeup, and plenty of time to get better despite having a high degree of polish for a high school bat.

There certainy were other players with higher upside available. Courtney Hawkins has 30- or 40-homer potential, but I really worry about his ability to hit for contact, enough such that I fear he could stall in the minors. Luc Giolito might have the best stuff of any pitcher in this draft, but he carries some pretty hefty injury concerns and a $7 million price tag, which is the Mets' entire budget, more or less.

I'll have a full scouting report up later tonight, but I, at least, like the pick.
