Mets 11, Phillies 1: Mets Work Slow Burn on Fireworks Night

The Mets started their offensive explosion humbly, scoring in the bottom of the first on a Dan Murphy triple and a David Wright RBI groundout. The Phillies immediately tied things up on a Carlos Ruiz homer to start the top of the third, but that would be the last appearance their bats made tonight. The Mets regained the lead in the bottom of the second, on a two-run single by Jon Niese and an RBI double from Dan Murphy. They extended their lead in the fourth on a pair of two-out RBI singles from Ruben Tejada and Murphy. Wright put things out of reach with a long three-run bomb to the left of the Apple in the sixth. Murphy capped a grand day at the plate with a two-run double in the eighth that gave the Mets a healthy 10-run lead. Niese, meanwhile, threw eight strong innings to make that margin stand up.

Full recap to come.
