AAA - Buffalo Bisons (44-45)_______________________________________
BUFFALO 5, SYRACUSE 1 (Box)
Jeurys Familia only walked one and pitched into the seventh. These are good things. Josh Rodriguez powered the Bisons offense with a three-run blast and has hit a blistering .339/.381/.593 since his promotion to Buffalo. I guess if Terry ever wants five back-up middle infielders on the roster instead of four, Rodriguez is ready. Jenrry Mejia pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Chris Schwinden returned from wandering the desert for 40 days and 40 nights to finish things off.
- CF Matt Den Dekker: 1-5, R, 3 K (.296/.346/.515 // .190/.217/.400 @ AAA)
- 1B Josh Satin: 1-2, R, 3 BB, K (.288/.384/.434); The 'cuse must have been afraid of clean-up hitter Josh Satin. As they should be.
- RF Valentino Pascucci: 0-4, R, BB, K (.235/.374/.421)
- RHP Jeurys Familia: W, 6.1 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 5 K (81.1 IP, 4.98, 72 K, 53 BB, 86 H, 4 HR); 8:3 GO:FO ratio. Best start of the year, but his mechanics still look awful to me.
- RHP Jenrry Mejia: 2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K (27 IP, 4.00, 13 K, 10 BB, 23 H, 3 HR)
- RHP Chris Schwinden: 0.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K (71.2 IP, 4.27, 50 K, 25 BB, 72 H, 9 HR, 4 teams)
AA - Binghamton Mets (39-46)_____________________________________
BINGHAMTON 8, RICHMOND 4 (Box)
Mark Cohoon turned in his best start of the year on his return to AA, and Wilmer Flores put a charge into the Bingo offense with three hits as the B-Mets put the brakes on an 8 of 9 skid.
- CF Juan Lagares: 0-5, SB (14) (.270/.328/.354)
- PH Jefry Marte: 1-1, RBI (.266/.334/.390)
- 2B Reese Havens: 1-2, 2B, R, 3 BB, K (.221/.350/.357); Has started to heat up with the weather, but stil turns 26 in October.
- 1B Allan Dykstra: 1-5, 2B, R, K (.243/.393/.357)
- 3B Wilmer Flores: 3-4, HR (12), 2 R, RBI, BB (.309/.355/.485 // .390/.433/.576 @ AA); Doesn't turn 21 for another month, keep in mind.
- SS Wilfredo Tovar: 2-5, 2 R, RBI (.288/.374/.390 // .306/.358/.408 @ AA)
- C Juan Centeno: 3-4, 2B, R, RBI, K (.277/.330/.335)
- LHP Mark Cohoon: W, 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR (87.1 IP, 4.84, 44 K, 19 BB, 95 H, 10 HR)
- LHP Robert Carson: 0.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K (28 IP, 4.18, 26 K, 13 BB, 34 H, 2 HR)
Hi-A - St. Lucie Mets (7-9 // 56-28)________________________________________
ST. LUCIE 6, JUPITER 5 (Box)
Some drama at Digital Domain Field. With a 6-3 lead, Adam Kolarek came on to get a six-out save for the Mets. After getting the first two batters in the eighth, a hit by pitch, walk, wild pitch and throwing error got Jupiter within one run. After a lead off single and a sacrifice bunt, the Hammerheads had two shots to get the tying run in from 2nd, but Kolarek got a strikeout and a grounder to shortstop ended things for the good guys. On the offensive side of thins, Cory Vaughn hit his 15th home run of the year, just one off the league lead.
- RF Cory Vaughn: 2-4, HR (15), R, RBI, K (.233/.335/.444); Heck if I know what to do with Vaughn at this point.
- LF Travis Taijeron: 1-3, R, BB (.287/.402/.556 // .267/.411/.600 @ A+)
- C Blake Forsythe: 0-3, K, HBP (.261/.365/.424)
- RHP Erik Goeddel: 4.1 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 5 BB, 3 K, HBP (59 IP, 3.66, 48 K, 28 BB, 67 H, 3 HR); Figured his mix of pitches would get him at least to the upper minors by now. Injuries have hampered his development, but hit and walk totals suggest the command and control aren't quite there anymore.
- RHP Taylor Whitenton: W, 2.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 K (39.1 IP, 2.29, 47 K, 25 BB, 28 H, 0 HR)
- LHP Adam Kolarek: SV, 2 IP, 0 ER, 2 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K, WP, HBP, E (1) (43.1 IP, 1.66, 58 K, 14 BB, 36 H, 1 HR); Yep, that's a pretty exciting save.
REHAB ALERT: Zach Lutz DH'd and went 1-3 with a double and 3 RBI. Walked once, K'd once.
Lo-A - Savannah Sand Gnats (5-10 // 46-36)__________________________________
SAVANNAH 1, CHARLESTON 0 (10) (Box)
Michael Fulmer good. Offense bad. Aderlin go boom. The end.
- C Cam Maron: 0-3, K (.297/.371/.410)
- 3B Aderlin Rodriguez: 1-4, HR (15), R, RBI, E (17) (.274/.338/.498); Walk-off blast was third home run in four games. Hitting .317/.370/.537 away from Historic Grayson Stadium.
- DH Albert Cordero: 0-3, K (.195/.253/.292)
- CF Gilbert Gomez: 1-4, K, SB (3), E (6) (.274/.349/.336)
- SS Matthew Reynolds: 1-4 (.286/.318/.476)
- RHP Michael Fulmer: 7 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K (70 IP, 2.90, 62 K, 25 BB, 51 H, 4 HR); Last 3 starts, 18 K, 6 BB in 19 IP. Starting to figure things out, and still only 19. Going to find his way onto some Top 100 lists this offseason I bet.
- CF Brandon Nimmo: 2-5, RBI, 2 K
- SS Philip Evans: 0-5, 2 K; Since my flattering scouting report of him was published on Monday, he's gone 4-24. Jinx.
- C Kevin Plawecki: 2-4, 2 R
- 1B Jayce Boyd: 1-4, HR (1), R, 2 RBI, BB, K; .400/.458/.850 is a nice start to one's professional career.
- LF Stefan Sabol: 0-5, R, K
- RHP Gabriel Ynoa: 6 IP, 6 ER, 8 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HR, WP; 19 year old has the Rafael Montero starter kit. Like all the Cyclone pitchers this year, he missed bats and pounded the zone. Unfortunately the bats he didn't miss...
Short Season A - Brooklyn Cyclones (14-5)__________________________________
BROOKLYN 7, WILLIAMSPORT 6 (11) (Box)
Another walk-off win, though this was less exciting. Kevin Plawecki led off the bottom of the eleventh with a single, and two wild pitches and three walks later, the Cyclones were victorious.
Appalachian League (R) - Kingsport Mets (4-13)__________________________________
GAME 1: ELIZABETHTON 6, KINGSPORT 2 (Box)
GAME 2: ELIZABETHTON 5, KINGSPORT 4 (Box)
Doesn't look like it is going to be Kingsport's year. I wonder how much of this is due to having so many guys that normally would have been in the complex league.
- SS Gavin Cecchini: 0-3 // 0-4 ,2 K
- 2B Branden Kaupe: 0-3, 2 K // Pinch-ran
- LF Joe Tuschak: 0-2, R, BB, K // Also pinch-ran
LOOGY WATCH
With all the fuss over the Mets only having one lefty in the pen right now, it's time for a new recurring feature. Here are your potential future LOOGYs and how they are doing against LHB this year.
Josh Edgin (AAA) 14.1 IP, 21 K, 8 BB, .218 BAA
Almost made the team out of spring training, but is now probably next in line to get a shot at that 2nd lefty spot. Walks are high, but have been less of an issue lately. Low 3/4 arm slot plus a couple potentially above average pitchers in his FB/SL combo.
Robert Carson (AA) 6.1 IP, 6 K, 1 BB, .200 BAA
Weirdly small sample, but he's seem time as Bingo's closer, so he might be seeing more RHB used as pinch hitters. Already had a shot, but lefties that throw 93-95 get multiple ones.
Hamilton Bennett (A+) 18 IP, 19 K, 5 BB, .155 BAA
Has started throwing sidearm this year against lefties, but only against lefties, which has to be confusing. Seems to be working, though. Major change in mechanics is probably the only reason he hasn't been promoted to Bingo yet. Personal favorite of the author, so I'm biased.
Adam Kolarek (A+) 15.2 IP, 23 K, 5 BB, .164 BAA
St. Lucie's closer has been pretty good against righties as well, but has dominated lefties. Gets groundballs, too, posting almost a 2 to 1 GO/AO rate against southpaws.
Angel Cuan (A+) 28 IP, 29 K, 6 BB, .240 BAA
Yes, he's currently starting for St. Lucie and holding his own, but the 46 hits and only 19 strikeouts in 39.1 IP against right handers suggests that won't last forever. You'd think a move to the pen might help his stuff play up, but I don't know how much more you are going to get out of his 5'11" 150 lb frame, even in short bursts.
Carlos Vazquez (A) 14.1 IP, 19 K, 5 BB, .216 BAA
Vazquez has seen his walk rate tick up some this year, which is not a good sign for a guy with his fringy stuff.
Star of the Night
I don't know what position he is going to play in the bigs (except that it won't be 2B), and I don't know if this is just a good half season of work, but Wilmer Flores has kept on crushing in AA, despite being one of the youngest players at the level. If only I was more sure he was a third baseman in the end.
Goat of the Night
I hate to beat up on Kingsport, but they were the only affiliate that lost, and Game 2 starter Cristian Chivilli posted this lovely line: 3.1 2 5 5 6 1.
