Almost the weekend applesauce: Dickey for Cy, Torres for MVP

Dickey vs Johnson in Queens...how could you go wrong with an afternoon of that? If you happen to be one of the Flushing faithful, you just can't. R.A. Dickey was again fantastic yesterday as he led the Mets to a rare win at home (at least recently). The box score can be found here. Dickey now leads the NL with 15 wins and 166 strikeouts, and he's a very serious contender for the NL Cy Young award. I love DIckey.

Also in yesterday's game, Andres Torres was a bit awesome. He's been good against Josh Johnson in the past, so it really shouldn't have come as a huge surprise. After his recent hot streak, Torres is now up to 1.5 fWAR on the season. For what it's worth, Angel Pagan sits at 1.8 worth about 160 extra plate appearances. Even without getting anything from Ramon Ramirez, the TRAID is starting to look a little better for the Mets.

Andres Torres may well be around next year. Actually, just about everyone on the roster will be unless they are TRAIDed. Despite that though, Joel Sherman doesn't think the Mets have much in the way of building blocks going forward. Maybe it's just me, but I look at Jon Niese, Dillon Gee, Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, and the rest of the young pitching we have in the upper minors and see a considerable amount of cost controlled young talent.

I like Terry Collins. I really do. But I don't like his infatuation with Justin Turner. If he wants to ride out the season with Turner on the bench, fine. He best not have us leaving an actual prospect unprotected this winter though, as 40 man roster spots will be at a bit of a premium.

Around Baseball:

There was only 1 other game involving our division yesterday, and that was the Nats taking on the Astros. It doesn't take Nostradamus to predict the outcome of that one, and to nobodies surprise the Nats won. Note to Joel Sherman...lot's of electric young arms can make a mediocre team really good in a hurry.

The Yankees rode back to back blasts yesterday as they beat the Tigers. Joe Girardi was tossed from this one for arguing.

Former Yankee legend Melky Cabrera will be hitting the market this winter, and Fangraphs took a look at what he might command. Cabrera seems like the kind of player Omar would have been all over, doesn't he?

Finally for today, the postseason schedule was announced. The Mets won't be involved, but it will still be fun to watch.
