Mets Sign Pitcher Andrew Carpenter To Minor League Contract

The Mets announced they have signed 27-year-old right-handed pitcher Andrew Carpenter to a minor league contract. Carpenter was drafted by the Phillies in the second round of the 2006 amateur draft, and he spent several seasons in the organization before he was claimed off waivers by the Padres on September 2, 2011. A couple months later, the Blue Jays claimed him off waivers from the Padres, and the Blue Jays recently designated him for assignment.

Over the course of his seven seasons in the minors, Carpenter has posted a 3.53 ERA in 164 appearances, 117 of which were starts, with rates of 6.9 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9.

In the majors, however, Carpenter has struggled to the tune of a 7.56 ERA in 33.1 innings, and all but one of his 23 appearances have come in relief. Strangely enough, he has an 8.9 K/9 in the big leagues, but he also owns a 4.9 BB/9. Both rates are rather insignificant because of the incredibly small sample size.

Based on PITCH f/x data, Carpenter's fastball averages just below 90 mph, and he throws a slider and splitter, too. For now, the Mets have assigned Carpenter to Double-A Binghamton. He has not pitched lower than the Triple-A level since 2008.
