Quick Recap: Mets 2, Astros 1 — Ike Davis Breaks Out With Two Big Dongs

Hef.
Hef.

In his return to the big leagues with the Mets, Lucas Duda went 0-for-2 with a walk, but made his presence felt in the top of the ninth by gunning down Marwin Gonzalez at the plate to keep the score even at 1-1. The offensive star of the game for the Mets — indeed, the only player who showed up at the plate at all this afternoon — was Ike Davis, who hit two home runs — a solo shot in the fourth and a game-winning blast in the bottom of the ninth that gave the Mets a 2-1 win and a series victory over the NL Central basement-leading Astros.

The Astros' starting lineup, of whom only Brett Wallace could claim an on-base percentage better than .311, flailed away uselessly through eight innings against Jeremy Hefner. Hefner ran into a bit of trouble in the ninth, allowing two of his five hits as well as his one run before exiting with the game tied 1-1, no outs, and Gonzalez on second. Robert Carson came on and got Wallace to line out to first, then Carson ceded the mound to Bobby Parnell, who allowed a single to Ben Francisco, on which play Gonzalez was thrown out on the aforementioned throw by Duda.

We knew it was over when...

Davis's second home run barely cleared the fence in right, clearing the Mets' dugout in celebration.

What else?

  • Hefner struck out seven and walked just one, a performance which lowered his ERA by nearly a half-run, from 5.11 to 4.65.
  • Mike Baxter, who walked five times in a game a few weeks ago, today saw just seven pitches in three trips to the plate.
  • Andres Torres saw nineteen pitches in four plate appearances, but he struck out four times.
