AAA - Buffalo Bisons (54-58)_______________________________________

SYRACUSE 2, BUFFALO 0 (Box)

Yunesky Maya may have been an 8-million dollar boondoggle by the Nats (proving they were serious about winning by spending bad dollars?) but the Syracuse Chiefs certainly aren't complaining. The 30-yr old Cuban vet dominated the Herd lineup last night, allowing just a pair of hits while striking out seven. Duda and Nieuwenhuis continued to look bad in the wake of their demotions, but to be fair so did everybody else. It's worth noting that middling Bisons starter Garrett Olson was on par with Maya through six scoreless but a solo job in the seventh was all Syracuse would need in this one.

AA - Binghamton Mets (52-58)_____________________________________

HARRISBURG 3, BINGHAMTON 4 [12] (Box)

You know it's a wild one when you've got pitchers pinch-hitting (Cohoon, 0-1, K). But ultimately this marathon affair was won on the strength of the Binghamton arms on a night when starter Cory Mazzoni was solid through seven and the B-Mets bullpen was even better over the next six. In fact, after the Senators pulled ahead in the fourth, they wouldn't touch home again and the relief crew would go on to allow just four baserunners over the finals six. Hurrah for allowing a combined 0-for-15 with RISP. Meanwhile blast from the past Dustin Martin singled home Raul Reyes for a walkoff winner in this four+ hour affair.

  • 3B Wimer Flores: 1-6, K; .390 over his first 16 games, .188 in his last 21
  • PH Jefry Marte: 1-1, RBI
  • SS Wilfredo Tovar: DNP; Batting .162 over his last ten, likely just needed a breather
  • CF Juan Lagares: 1-5, HR(3); Slugging .500 over his last ten
  • 2B Reese Havens: 1-6, 2 K; BB% is up this year but so too is the K%, ultimately he's just not hitting enough
  • 1B Eric Campbell: 1-6, 2 K
  • C Francisco Pena: 1-3, BB, K, SB(1), E(5); After a quick start to his Double-A career a .157 July has his average below the Mendoza Line, making his first half look more like a mirage
  • RHP Cory Mazzoni: 7 IP, 2 ER (1 unearned), 10 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 1 Pickoff; This start is Mazzoni in a nutshell: Solid results but he just doesn't miss enough bats
  • RHP Brad Holt: .2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 K
  • LHP C.J. Nitkowski: 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HB
  • RHP Ryan Fraser: 2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K
  • LHP Adam Kolarek: 1 IP, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Hi-A - St. Lucie Mets (19-22 // 68-41)________________________________________

ST. LUCIE 2, CLEARWATER 5 (Box)

This one was a tale of two lefties. Starter Angel Cuan continued to show that he's yet to reach the level where his finesse stuff won't be competitive (that'll likely happen in Double-A). Despite some shoddy defense, a pair of double play balls kept this one tied into the sixth. Unfortunately that's when the Leather Rocket gave it away, uncharacteristically giving up a bunch of hits including the homer that would ultimately decide it. If the double play is a pitcher's best friend then the three-run bomb is his worst enemy. However, as dominant as he's been throughout his career in the low minors Leathersich does not feature the stuff of an Edgin or perhaps even a Kolarek. So basically we should all know that it can't be unicorns and rainbows forever.

Lo-A - Savannah Sand Gnats (18-23 // 59-49)__________________________________

GREENSBORO 5, SAVANNAH 2 (Box)

Forgettable effort from the Gnats on a night when no phase of the game was working particularly well. This is what a team without much prospect talent looks like without one of their horses on the mound.

Short Season A - Brooklyn Cyclones (26-18)__________________________________

CONNECTICUT 11, BROOKLYN 3 (Box)

Cyclones starter Luis Mateo's day of reckoning finally came last night as he was hit up pretty good. The 22-yr old Mateo allowed runs in three of the first five frames and despite his team-leading .169 opponent average he allowed ten hits in this one. This actually marks the third time over his last five appearances he's allowed four or more runs. The silver lining is that the hard-throwing righty still managed ten strikeouts over his five innings pitched and also didn't walk a batter. On the other side, despite some fight from sluggers Sabol and Evans, the Cyclones lineup was mostly quiet on a day when their defense failed them as well.

Appalachian League (R) - Kingsport Mets (13-26)__________________________________

KINGSPORT 7, GREENEVILLE 4 (Box)

2011 21st rounder John Gant was solid again in the start. 2010 tenth rounder Matt Budgell was excellent in relief.

  • SS Gavin Cecchini: DNP; Nursing a bruised hand after taking a HBP directly off the fingers, supposedly no break though
  • 2B Brandon Kaupe: 1-4, RBI, R, K
  • C Thomas Nido: 1-3, R, BB
  • DH Jorge Rivero: 3-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R; 23-yr old switch-hitting IF from Cuba, looking solid in his first exposure to pitching stateside
  • CF Maikis De La Cruz: 0-5, 4 K; Oof
  • RHP John Gant: 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K
  • RHP Matthew Budgell: 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K; 2010 tenth rounder has been stellar in a strictly relief role this season

Lupo-Watch: The 18-yr old Vicente Lupo has cooled a bit since his white-hot June-July, batting .258 over his last ten games with just one XBH over that span. Certainly not much of a black mark but for him that's a serious slump. Regardless, he's still top three in OBP, SLG and homers while batting at a .338 clip. And of course he's still flirting with the rare and elusive BB% > K% (14.5%:15%).

Star of the Night

Let's give this one to the entire B-Mets pen this morning after a night where they extended the game into the twelfth, long enough for the Bingo bats to finally come around and win it.

Goat of the Night

More than a couple deserving candidates on a down night for the system. But rules clearly state that in the event of Golden Sombrero > horns. This means you Maikis De La Cruz.
