Tonight, Matt Harvey. Tomorrow, R.A. Dickey. A once-proud 2012 Mets team has been reduced to mere rookie- and deity-watching. So how did the young mortal do?

Harvey will likely pitch two more starts; the antepenultimate was not for his scrapbooks. The kid brings gas, and in the first inning it worked for him. 97 was normal; 98 peeked through. After an infield single banged off his glove hand, Harvey set down three and got a swinging strikeout that was vintage Harvey, circa a month ago. In the second, the diet of hard stuff on the outside edge inspired the Cardinals to knock it all the other way. Four consecutive singles put Harvey in the lurch, and when he moved inside, he hit a batter, and when he brought out the breaking stuff the next inning, he got a little wild. Harvey sat down after five innings with three earned runs, six hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Then we got hit a few balls, failed to score. Then, Jeurys Familia! The 22-year-old Dominican struck out Lance Berkman, his first big league batter, with a 97-mph Cholula-worthy heater up and away.

We knew it was over when...

The first Cardinal batter reached base in six of the first seven innings.

What else?

Ruben Tejada made a wonderful throw from the hole that just pulled Daniel Murphy off the bag, and Andres Torres ran like hell to track down a fly ball for the last out in the 7th. It was gorgeous.
