Mets Morning News: Mets Show Interest In Brian Wilson, Sandy Alderson Doesn't Fear The Beard

Your Sunday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links

Meet the Mets

Nothing new on the Justin Upton front but Bob Nightengale of USA Today said this morning that the Mets have shown strong interest in quirky former Giants' closer Brian Wilson. Sandy Alderson watched Wilson throw in a private workout on Saturday. That'd be a nice speculative gamble for the Mets pen.

Meanwhile, Marc Carig says that the team continues to play the waiting game in the starting pitching and outfield market in order to capitalize on the approaching start of spring training.

Around the Majors

The Nationals are showing heavy interest in unretired righty Javier Vazquez, who apparently was throwing in the mid-90's during Puerto Rican Winter League games.

Former big leaguer Geoff Blum will become a part of the Astros' broadcasting team.

Dave Cameron takes a look into what Justin Upton's trade value actually is.

Yesterday At AA

Eric relays to us that former Met Marlon Anderson has moved into his mother's basement and opened up a blog, where he will talk about food and baseball.

With his addition to the Top 10 second basemen in baseball list, Chris asks whether Daniel Murphy really is a top-10 second baseman. Offhand I'd probably say no but it's certainly not egregious that he's on there either.

Brock recounts the day when Rickey Henderson entered the Hall of Fame. Rickey probably would say something about Ricky in the third person here.
