Mets Sign Andrew Brown, Ted Berg Eats Celebratory Pork Sandwich

The Mets announced today that they have signed outfielder Andrew Brown to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training. Brown, most recently of the Rockies, hit .232/.302/.429 in 46 games with Colorado last year, but truly mashed in the hitter's haven of Colorado Springs, notching 24 home runs in 100 games for the Rockies' Pacific Coast League affiliate in 2012.

Brown was an 18th round pick of the Cardinals in 2007 and has posted solid, but not eye-popping numbers throughout his minor league career. Although he was drafted as a corner infielder, he moved to the outfield full-time in 2011 and has generally split time between left and right field in the minors. The right-handed hitting Brown has also shown a large platoon split, crushing left-handed pitching at just about every level of affiliated ball. While he will most likely be an everyday outfielder in Las Vegas this year, he is a reasonable contingency plan if the Mets fail to sign Scott Hairston.

One person who will definitely be celebrating this news is SNY.tv's sandwich blogger, Ted Berg, who called for the Mets to sign Brown a month ago.

Brown’s presented here more as an archetype of what the Mets should be looking for than a specific guy the Mets should be signing, and for all I know there are 10 teams currently bidding for Andrew Brown’s services. But if Brown’s looking for Major League playing time, it’s hard to figure a better spot for an unproven righty-hitting corner outfielder than Queens right now.

If nothing else, the Mets' Triple-A team should be quite competitive this year, proving once again that living well is the best revenge.
