Mets Morning News: Speculating about 2014 while remembering 1986

New York Mets related news and links for October 25, 2013

Al Bello

This date in Mets history was a fun one, as October 25, 1986 may well have been the most exciting game in the history of the franchise. Baseball Reference has the full box score from that wonderful game, and you can watch the entire contest here if you've never seen it before (or if you just want to watch it again).

Mark Simon wants to see Sandy Alderson call the Rangers on shortstop Jurikson Profar. I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask, but I'd be shocked if the Rangers even considered it. We also had a little speculation about whether or not the team would pursue Andre Ethier.

A trio of former Mets may all become involved with the Alex Rodriguez appeal. Great.

Yesterday at AA

Chris McShane took a look at a pair of former Mets that will both be on the free agent market this winter, profiling starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey and relief pitcher Joe Smith.

Steve also took a look at a free agent that could potentially fit, profiling Brad Bergesen.

Since we're talking about pitchers anyway, it makes sense that we passed out the Piazza for worst relief pitcher. Unfortunately, there were an awful lot of qualified candidates.

Around Baseball

The Red Sox lost Game 2 of the World Series, their first loss in the fall classic since October 27, 1986. #BlameBeltran

Much was made of the Cardinals struggles with the leather in Game 1, so BtB took a look at some defensive metrics to determine if we should have been all that surprised. Grant Brisbee also took a look at Pete Kozma.

There was an interesting read on why it might make some sense for the Royals to TRAID Billy Butler, although he'd certainly be more of a fit in the AL.

A former Met was DFA'd yesterday, as Pedro Beato was surplus to the requirements.
