Mets Morning News: Let the offseason related outrage begin!

Your Wednesday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

The first report of Mets' interest in a free agent occurred yesterday and it was a shortstop! The Mets have been in contact with Rafael Furcal's people and they're apparently not the only team interested. Furcal would've been a really nice acquisition five years ago but at age 36, who knows what's left in the tank.

17 Mets farmhands became minor league free agents yesterday. Among the familiar names were Greg Burke, catcher Francisco Pena, and infielder Brandon Hicks.

Toby Hyde answers a question about whether 2014 is a make or break year for shortstop Gavin Cecchini. Considering his age, it isn't, but it'd be really nice to see some progress in Savannah.

Around the Majors

Tom Verducci writes about the ways in which the manager's role has changed.

Anna Benson, the wife of ex-Mets pitcher Kris Benson, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and weapons charges against the former pitcher.

The Mariners have hired ex-Pirates manager and Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McClendon as their new manager.

32-year old righty Randy Messenger, who has pitched very well in Japan with the Hanshin Tigers, has set a November 15th deadline for MLB teams to make him offers.

The Yankees have expressed interest in Brandon Phillips, in case Robinson Cano walks away, but the price seems to be very high.
