David Wright named Captain, Niese gets Opening Day nod

David Wright joins Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and John Franco as the fourth captain in Mets history. Also, Jon Niese is officially named Opening Day starter.

It had been rumored throughout the Spring, but it is now official. After today's spring training game with the St. Louis Cardinals, David Wright was officially named captain of the New York Mets. While this merely confirms what everyone already thought about Wright, it is still a lovely honor for the Virginia boy that grew up a Mets fan and will now end up with almost every team offensive record by the time he finally hangs up the spikes.

Terry Collins also confirmed that Jon Niese would make the Opening Day start at Citi Field. It seemed obvious in recent weeks that Johan Santana would not be ready by April 1st, and this all but confirms that he will open the 2013 season on the disabled list. Niese is coming off a very strong 2012 season and was the logical choice given his tenure with the team to get the Opening Day nod.
