The Mets' Opening Day roster is almost set, which brings us to our final installment of the Make-The-Mets-O-Meter for pitchers. With Pedro Feliciano and Aaron Laffey sent to minor league camp and Jeremy Hefner slotted into the rotation, this is the leanest meter of the year yet.
With the rotation set and Bobby Parnell, Brandon Lyon, and Josh Edgin locked into the bullpen, the players below are vying for the final four spots on the team's roster, assuming the Mets carry twelve pitchers on Opening Day. Over the weekend, the team indicated that it wants to carry two left-handed relief pitchers, which is of obvious significance here.

Scott Atchison, RHP | ![]() |
Atchison has looked exactly like you'd expect him to look in spring training games. It'd be a big surprise to see him not make the team. He will, however, require that someone else be cut from the Mets' 40-man roster. |
Greg Burke, RHP | ![]() |
Burke's strikeout and walk numbers this spring have been outstanding, and he's already on the team's 40-man roster. |
Robert Carson, LHP | ![]() |
With Feliciano out of the picture for now, Carson appears to have a leg up on the second lefty gig, if only because Scott Rice isn't on the team's 40-man roster. |
Jeurys Familia, RHP | ![]() |
Effective in spring training games despite a hideous walk rate, perhaps Familia cracks the Opening Day bullpen. Like Carson, he has an advantage since he's on the 40-man. |
LaTroy Hawkins, RHP | ![]() |
He still hasn't pitched much in spring games, but he has a 3.39 ERA and 125 ERA+ over his last six seasons in the big leagues. He shouldn't be counted out just yet. |
Jenrry Mejia, RHP | ![]() |
Clearly still a work in progress, Mejia's demotion to minor league camp could very well have happened by the time this publishes. If not, expect it soon. |
Scott Rice, LHP | ![]() |
The 31-year-old would-be rookie might have a better case for a spot on the roster than Carson, but will the Mets cut someone else from the 40-man roster to make room for him? |
