The Mets have a long tradition of winning Opening Day games, and their first game of the 2013 was no exception. Jon Niese threw six-and-two-thirds innings of excellent baseball, striking out four and walking two while giving up two runs, and the Mets' hitters gave him and the bullpen more than enough support.
Aside from Ike Davis, every Met, including Niese, reached base at least twice. The team scored twice in the second, twice in the third, and three times in the fourth inning. Collin Cowgill, the team's everyday center fielder to begin the season, topped off the scoring with a grand slam in the seventh inning.
Throw in a great defensive play and two successful stolen base attempts by David Wright, Scott Rice's one-two-three inning with two strikeouts in his big league debut, and scoreless appearances by Brandon Lyon and Scott Atchison, and it was quite the game to start the season.
