Mets option Jeurys Familia to Triple-A Las Vegas, place Johan Santana on 60-day disabled list

The Mets made a pair of roster moves following their Saturday afternoon win over the Marlins.

Following their win this afternoon, the Mets made a pair of expected roster moves, sending Jeurys Familia down to Triple-A Las Vegas and transferring Johan Santana from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Familia, who made the team's bullpen out of spring training despite shaky command in Grapefruit League play, struggled in his lone appearance on Thursday. He'll try to work out his walk issues in Vegas, and his demotion opens up a spot for Aaron Laffey, who will start for the Mets tomorrow, on the 25-man roster.

Laffey wasn't on the team's 40-man roster entering play today, however, which is why Santana had to be moved to the 60-day disabled list. Since he's out for the season, that's merely a clerical move, as it gives the Mets a free spot on their 40-man roster for Laffey. With the moves, the Mets have trimmed their bullpen from eight to seven and will now carry five starting pitchers.
