Dillon Gee took a tough loss against the Padres last week. Tonight he took a tougher one, as the Phils roughed him up in every conceivable way. Gee was smacked around to the tune of four runs in the bottom of the second, including a two-out RBI single from his opposite number, Cliff Lee. Then in the third, he surrendered back-to-back solo shots to Ryan Howard and Michael Young and a third homer to John Mayberry, gift wrapping a commanding 7-0 lead for the Phillies.
The unstoppable John Buck gave the Mets slight hope by belting a two-run homer in the top of the fourth, and Jordany Valdespin tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. But the Phils scored once more against reliever Greg Burke in the fourth. Eight runs is usually more than enough when Lee is pitching, and that proved the case this evening, as the lefty went one out short of the distance. The loss snaps the Mets' winning streak at three.
Full recap to come.
