Mets reliever Jeurys Familia has biceps tendinitis, could be placed on disabled list

The right-hander will be unavailable for tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates

USA TODAY Sports

The Mets' bullpen, which has been a mixed bag this season, received good and bad news today. The good news is that reliever Frank Francisco is close to returning. The bad news is that his return to the Mets might be expedited because of an injury to another Mets reliever.

According to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin, Jeurys Familia will not be available to pitch tonight due to biceps tendinitis. It is believed to be fatigue related, although his velocity was down four miles per hour on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox, a 6-3 loss in which he gave up solo homer to Alex Rios.

For the season, Familia has pitched 10.1 innings, giving up 10 hits while recording seven walks and seven strikeouts

Manager Terry Collins says it is possible that Familia may be placed on the disabled list. If that were to happen, Francisco would be activated off the DL. He is currently on a rehab assignment with Class-A St. Lucie. Once Francisco does return , he will not immediately be reinstated as the Mets' closer.
