Mets sign Matt Fox off of Atlantic League roster

After joining the Twins as a supplemental draft pick in 2004, Matthew Fox finally pitched in the major leagues in 2010 with Minnesota and Boston. Fox spent the entire 2011 season in Boston's minor league system and moved on to the Seattle organization last season. This year, he had been pitching for the Atlantic League's York Revolution before the Mets reached out and signed the right-hander to a deal today.

Fox has thrown 17 innings so far this season with the Revolution over the course of five appearances (four starts). He's struck out 18 batters and walked just three and has a 1.58 ERA. A sample size that small in an unaffiliated league probably means nothing, and he only threw 26.1 innings at various stages of Seattle's system in 2012. So here are his 2011 figures with Pawtucket: 129.1 innings pitched, 3.96 ERA, 122 strikeouts, 49 walks, and 22 home runs allowed.

The home runs allowed are at Ervin Santana levels, so Fox cannot be looking forward to pitching in Las Vegas, although I can say from experience that Las Vegas is generally a more fun place to be than York, Pennsylvania.

We don't know right now who Fox will be replacing in the Las Vegas rotation, but speculation is that Collin McHugh is going to get bumped up to the big leagues. He's certainly earned it. McHugh has just allowed one earned run over 14 innings in his last two starts and has a 2.74 ERA on the season with 36 strikeouts and 9 walks.
