Shaun Marcum turned in his best start yet this season (not hard to do, I realize), but was undone by a few bouts of bad luck, a commodity not exactly in short supply for the Mets these days. First, he fell victim to a two-run fourth inning not entirely of his own doing. The first run scored on a two-out Jon Jay double, and Jay was able to score after David Wright dropped a ball while attempting to tag him out on a rundown play.
The Mets actually drew even in this one when Rick Ankiel belted a two-run shot in the top of the seventh. Marcum, meanwhile, continued to pitch until two outs in the bottom half, when he gave up a walk and a single. Reliever Scott Rice then entered the game just long enough to hurl a wild pitch and bring in the go-ahead run. The Cards unnecessarily tacked on another against LaTroy Hawkins, and the Mets giftwrapped one for the Cardinals, their sixth loss in a row.
Full recap to come.
