The Mets finally won a game yesterday, snapping a six-game losing skid by beating the Cardinals 5-2. Jon Niese was much better than he's been recently, allowing only a pair of runs while working into the 8th inning. Daniel Murphy also had a solid day for the Mets, going 4-for-4 with a walk*. The full box score can be found here.
*That isn't a typo
Jason Bay is back in New York and spoke to the media about his time with the Mets. It sounds like he was just as frustrated by his performance as we were.
Next up for the Mets will be the Cubs, and the first pitcher Chicago will get to face is Matt Harvery (or something).
Rob Neyer had some older scouting reports that hit the nail on the head, including Mets legend Mike Piazza
Yesterday as AA
This day in Mets history brought us the first of many Darryl Strawberry home runs.
We had a mid-May prospect performance meter, which has a trio of pitchers on fire.
We also had a look at some potential upgrades to the outfield, and I'm particularly interested in Brandon Belt.
Around baseball
Most of the NL East had Thursday off to watch some hockey, but the Nationals had to play. They'd make the most of it, beating the Padres on the arm of Stephen Strasburg.
The Braves had some injury news to report, as Jonny Venters had Tommy John surgery.
BtB had an interesting read on velocity during starts, I'd certainly recommend taking a look.
