After finishing up Friday night's suspended game in losing fashion—the Braves taking that one, 7-5—the Mets went on to lose again, this time in the "nite cap," by a score of 6-0. These games—and the 2013 season generally—are beginning to get late very early on.
Dillon Gee started for the Mets and managed to keep the Braves off the board through the first four innings and retired the first two Atlanta hitters in the fifth before becoming rapidly and spectacularly unhinged. Chris Johnson singled to center and Mike Minor followed with a two-run homer, his first as a professional baseball player. Andrelton Simmons then doubled to left and scored on Jason Heyward's single. Justin Upton's double chased Heyward home, and Upton scored on a single by Freddie Freeman.
It was your textbook single-homer-double-single-double-single self-immolation by Gee, who has perhaps been the worst starting pitcher on a staff bursting at the seams with terrible starting pitching.
The Mets and Braves conclude their series at 8:00 PM on Sunday night when Shaun Marcum takes on Julio Teheran. The game will be televised on ESPN, which is really just piling on at this point, isn't it?
