This Week In Mets Quotes: What World Series?, the Mets need Ike, and Boras would like to sell the Mets some position players

Lots of interesting, funny, idiotic, and insightful things were said by the Mets—and about them—over the past week. Here are some of our favorites.

USA TODAY Sports

To be fair, this might be the most honest thing Jeff ever said.

"I wish we could see you in the World Series, but I'm not sure that's going to happen this year." -Jeff Wilpon [ESPN]

Please tell me there isn’t a Rachel Phelps-like cut out of Jeff in the clubhouse.

"You'd have to take a poll in there how many guys read that stuff. If that motivated them, we'll be blasting them again tonight." -Terry Collins [ESPN]

I hear that if you start Ike up, if you start Ike up, he’ll never stop. If you start Ike up…

"We’re all rooting for Ike. You have to root for him, he’s a tremendous guy, he’s a big piece of this team. If we’re gonna have a chance to win baseball games, Ike Davis needs to be in the middle of that lineup. To sort of get him started I think is a huge boost." -Terry Collins [ESPN]

Because life isn’t fair, Omar would be charged with an error on his first fielding chance.

"If [Omar Quintanilla] gives us some offense, that's a plus. But we know one thing: He's going to catch it and he's going to make the right plays and he's going to throw people out and keep us in games defensively." -Terry Collins [ESPN]

They "think" that, but I won’t be impressed until they "know."

"I just think there’s a different attitude in the clubhouse. I think they now think they can win some games." -Terry Collins [ESPN]

Yeah, he’s a little better than good

"[Matt Harvey’s] good. He commanded the fastball real well. It seemed like he was putting it where he wanted to. He didn’t make any mistakes with his off-speed. I mean, he used all four pitches. So it’s a battle when he’s got all four pitches working for him." -Lyle Overbay [ESPN]

It WAS awesome.

"It was awesome." -Matt Harvey on the Mets walkoff off Mariano Rivera [ESPN]

May I present Scott Boras saying exactly what you would think he would say?

"We’ve known Matt [Harvey] since he was 17 years old, so we’re not too surprised. The only thing I was surprised about was at the draft there were so few teams that really understood this player. … It was kind of obvious to us when we advised him to turn down $1 million from the Angels [as a third-round pick out of high school] that he was going to optimize himself and his performance.

"I don’t think there’s any question that the reason a club offers a player guarantees when they don’t have to is they deem it to be beneficial to them -- just by the nature that they offer them. So if the club is doing something beneficial for the club, obviously most likely it’s not beneficial to the player.

"On the other side, I do think there’s a melding in there. There are situations -- I’ve done contracts for Carlos Gonzalez, or just recently I did one for Elvis Andrus -- to where there is a melding of the club’s wants and the player’s wants where you do things in advance of free agency." -Scott Boras [ESPN]

Personally, I’m not an anti- or pro-Boras guy, but this last quote was pretty obvious.

"It could be an exciting time. They’re so starved position-player-wise, which is a problem, so they've got a lot of work to do in free agency." -Scott Boras [ESPN]

Sad Ike is sad.

''Anytime you lose a game it's not fun - especially on a play like that. 'Everything that can go wrong right now for me is going wrong.'' -Ike Davis [Yahoo! Sports]

Ike just needed more smiles.

"They wanted me to have fun again. Smile more, laugh on the field. I know that the fans may hate that, but I won't perform any better by being miserable. And I am now 1 for 1 with the new approach. The meeting today helped." -Ike Davis [Yahoo! Sports]

Keep on praying to those baseball gods, and keep batting Turner leadoff.

''The first thing I thought of was, get a hit. I said to the baseball gods that this kid needs a base hit.'' -Terry Collins [Yahoo! Sports]

You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry.

''I was fairly angry after he took that from us.'' -Daniel Murphy [Yahoo! Sports]

Like big time closers such as Benitez, Looper, Ayala, Francisco…

''If you're going to pitch in this city and you're going to be a closer in this city you've got to pitch in big, big-time situations. This isn't a playoff game but this is the Subway Series and this means a lot to a lot of people.'' -Terry Collins [Yahoo! Sports]
