Final Score: Mets 5, Cardinals 1 — Longballs, Gee clip Cards' wings

Mets batters hit three homers—really!—and Dillon Gee stranded many baserunners—to help Mets break their latest losing streak—really!

Hey, you *can* hit homers here. Whodathunkit?

USA TODAY Sports

For most of the evening, Cardinals rookie Shelby Miller pitched brilliantly, striking out 10 batters and allowing just 5 hits and no walks. And yet, the Mets were able to find just enough openings to come out on top. They took an early lead on a pair of two-out RBIs in the first from Daniel Murphy and Lucas Duda, then extended it on a Duda solo shot in the fourth. Dillon Gee permitted baserunners all night but somehow stranded all of them. The lone mark on his record was a solo homer by Allen Craig in the top of the sixth (Gee's traditional inning of death), but the Mets got that run back on a David Wright longball in the bottom half, then tacked on another run with a Marlon Byrd homer in the seventh. You can decide for yourself which was more unlikely: Three homers by the Mets at CitiField, or three relievers combining to throw 2 1/3 perfect innings to close out the victory.

Full recap to come.
