The lack of run support for Matt Harvey continues, and this time it forced New York's ace into his first loss of the season. It was hard to blame the Mets today, though, as they were going up against Adam Wainwright, who has been one of the best pitchers in the National League this season. He didn't have a bad game. Wainwright dominated the Mets for seven innings and left with a 1-0 lead that expanded to 2-0 when Allen Craig hit an RBI single off of LaTroy Hawkins in the eighth inning.
That run turned out to be kind of important, because the Mets got spunky in the ninth. Marlon Byrd hit a home run with one out in the ninth off of Cardinals closer Edward Mujica to avoid the shutout. John Buck followed with a double to increase the chance of a comeback, but Matt Carpenter made a great play to rob Kirk Nieuwenhuis of a hit before Mujica struck out Josh Satin to end the game.
