The Mets lost yet again this afternoon, as Jon Niese was inefficient, the offense struggled mightily, and the bullpen turned a small deficit into a large one.
Niese got into plenty of trouble in his outing but managed to allow just two runs in five-and-two-thirds innings of work. Both runs scored in the fourth inning, during which Niese issued three walks, on a Scott Feldman single. The Mets answered with one run on back-to-back doubles by Daniel Murphy and David Wright in the bottom of the inning. But the Mets' bullpen wound up giving up three runs in the eighth, and the Mets mustered up just one run in the bottom of that inning.
In addition to the misery at the plate, the Mets botched an opportunity to turn a triple play in the top of the ninth inning, though Greg Burke still managed to escape a bases-loaded, nobody out jam unscathed. The Mets got a couple runners on base in the bottom of the ninth but failed to score against Kevin Gregg.
