Final Score: Mets 4, Cubs 3 — Kirk Nieuwenhuis hits walk-off, three-run home run

The Mets avoided a sweep at the hands of the Cubs with an improbable walk-off win.

USA TODAY Sports

Wrapping up what had been a very disappointing homestand, the Mets managed a walk-off win against the Cubs in the bottom of the ninth inning after failing to score through the first eight innings. Trailing by three runs, Marlon Byrd hit a solo home run before Lucas Duda and John Buck reached base and were bunted over to second and third. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who's struggled mightily in the big leagues this year, then hit a walk-off, three-run home run to give the Mets a 4-3 victory.

Before that, it looked like the Mets would get swept by the Cubs. Jeremy Hefner allowed a run on three singles in the first inning. Chicago added two unearned runs in the fifth inning on a play that included three errant throws by the Mets, at which point it felt like the game was over.

But the bullpen kept the Cubs off the board for four innings, keeping the game close enough for the aforementioned walk-off win.
