Mets Morning News: Happy Harvey Day! Happy Wheeler Day!

New York Mets related news and links for Tuesday, June 18, 2013

USA TODAY Sports

The Mets and Braves got off to a later than usual start last night, as the awful weather in Atlanta forced the game to be delayed 3 hours and 43 minutes. Dillon Gee didn't seem to bothered by the delay though, throwing a shutout for his first 8 innings of work and driving in the Mets only run of the game. Lucas Duda also had a good game at the plate for the Mets, he went 4-4 in his first game as the starting 1st baseman. Unfortunately for Gee and the Mets, a Freddie Freeman 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th would be enough to send all 12 fans still in attendance home with a smile on their face. Rumor has it that the zombie formerly known as Bob Costas was not impressed with the celebration. The full boxscore can be found here.

Hopefully the Mets can generate a few more runs today, as they've got another pair of games to play with the Braves. The first will feature Matt Harvey taking on Alex Wood, while the second will see the major league debut of top prospect Zack Wheeler. Wheeler didn't sound too nervous when asked how he was feeling on Monday, here's hoping he doesn't pitch that way either.

Sandy Alderson reportedly doesn't plan to TRAID closer Bobby Parnell this year, instead believing he's a valuable piece that will be part on next season's Mets team. I suppose we'll see closer to the deadline, but I highly doubt that if a team calls with a sensible offer for him that we see him stay in NY.

Yesterday at AA

There was a whole lot going on at AA yesterday, and we start things off with a little Mets history. June 17 saw the Mets part ways with Willie Randolph, and promote the legendary Jerry Manuel.

If you haven't caught all of the action over the last week, we've nicely summed up who has been performing well and who hasn't. We had performance meters for both position players and pitchers for you on Monday.

Last night saw more of the farm system open their seasons, so it's probably a good time to have profiles of the players the Mets drafted a little bit later on. Here's rounds 21-25, along with an update on who has signed and who hasn't. That update includes 2nd round pick Andrew Church, whom the Mets inked to a deal yesterday.

The Amazin' Avenue Charity pledge drive is back, and it's giving you a chance to get creative with your pledges.

Around the Baseball

The Mets and Braves weren't the only divisional foes to lock horns yesterday, as the Nationals and Phillies got together as well. The Phillies came out on top in that one, winning 5-4.

The Marlins also played yesterday, and managed to get a win on the back of a pair of Giancarlo Stanton homeruns.

Max Scherzer improved to 10-0 yesterday, for whatever his w/l record is actually worth. Winz baby...

Remember Mark Teahen? He signed with the York Revolution of the Atlantic League yesterday.

That's it for the news today, but I'm sure there is plenty that I missed. WIth that in mind, we've decide we could use a little help tracking down stories, and have set up a way for you to point out any stories you think would make the morning news a better read.
