Final Score: Mets 4, Braves 3 — Harvey spectacular, Mets barely hold on for win

Matt Harvey set a career high with 13 strikeouts, and the Mets pushed across just enough runs to hold off a late Atlanta rally.

Matt Harvey was amazing again, and this time the Mets escaped with a victory despite an eighth inning that had fans sweating profusely. Harvey registered a career-high 13 strikeouts and didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning, when Jason Heyward chopped an infield single to the first base side of the mound. In the eighth inning, the first three Braves reached base against Harvey, and Terry Collins went to the bullpen.

Neither LaTroy Hawkins nor Scott Rice could put out the fire, and all three runners came around to score on RBI hits by Jordan Schafer and Jason Heyward. Bobby Parnell was finally brought in with two outs in the eighth to strike out Chris Johnson and preserve a 4-3 Mets lead. Parnell would earn the save one inning later.

The Mets scored their first run when Marlon Byrd reach on an infield single to third with two outs in the third inning. Daniel Murphy dashed around all the way from second and was safe at home on a play at the plate. In the fourth, John Buck crushed a solo home run to right. The Mets wouldn't score again until the eighth inning, when they loaded the bases with one out against Atlanta reliever David Carpenter. Jordany Valdespin scored on a walk and Omar Quintanilla added a sac fly to give the Mets the cushion necessary to survive the Braves' eighth inning rally.
