Per the team's Twitter account, the Mets have recalled top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler to the big club and optioned right-handed relief pitcher Greg Burke to Triple-A Las Vegas. Wheeler will make his second major league start tonight in Chicago against the White Sox. The move completes a round of roster musical chairs that was underway when a doubleheader allowed Wheeler to be called up temporarily as the Mets' 26th man.
The 23-year-old righty will look to build on his effective first start against his home town Atlanta Braves, when he pitched six shutout innings while striking out seven in a Mets win. Wheeler did walk five in that game, and has indicated that he will look to improve his control tonight.
Meanwhile, Greg Burke has been a decent option out of the bullpen this season. The Camden, New Jersey native has racked up 21 innings over 22 relief appearances with the Mets, and has done so with a perfectly cromulent 3.86 ERA, 19 strikeouts, and seven walks.
