Final Score: Pirates 3, Mets 2 — Mets lose in extras despite great start by Jeremy Hefner

The Mets lost to the Pirates in 11 innings as Terry Collins chose not to use Bobby Parnell with the game tied.

USA TODAY Sports

The Mets lost to the Pirates in eleven innings, snapping their four-game winning streak. Jeremy Hefner allowed just two runs in seven innings of work and had a low pitch count entering the eighth, but Terry Collins opted to pinch hit for him with Jordany Valdespin—who struck out—in the eighth.

The Mets scored their first run in the sixth on a bloop single by David Wright and tied the game on a solo home run by Kirk Niewenhuis in the seventh. With Hefner gone, though, Terry Collins went through four relief pitchers to get the Mets through the tenth inning. But Bobby Parnell wasn't one of them, and he remained in the bullpen as Gonzalez Germen gave up the game-winning run in the bottom of the eleventh.
