There was a question as to whether or not Shaun Marcum would even make his start tonight due to numbness in his hand and in retrospect, it might have been wise if he didn't.
The former Milwaukee Brewer got roughed up by his old team, allowing six runs (five earned) in five innings, leading the Mets to a 7-6 loss. Marcum gave up 11 hits and a walk, including a solo homerun to Jonathan Lucroy in the fourth inning. The opposing pitcher, Yovani Gallardo, also gave him a lot of trouble, recording two hits and a sacrifice bunt which led to a huge insurance run for the Brewers.
Gallardo, who has pitched very poorly this season, shut down the Mets for the first four innings before unraveling in the fifth and sixth. Down 5-0 in the fifth, the Mets rallied for four runs in the fifth and sixth inning to cut it to 5-4. The Brewers added a run in the bottom of the frame after Daniel Murphy botched a sacrifice bunt, allowing Logan Schafer to score all the way from first.
The Mets loaded the bases in the seventh but only scored one run on a Marlon Byrd sac fly. They stranded two runners to end the inning. The Brewers would add another run in the seventh to make it 7-5. The Mets got themselves another opportunity to tie the game in the eighth as Murphy batted with runners on second and third and two out. However, Murphy popped out to end the frame.
The Mets would cut the deficit to one once again in the ninth inning as Byrd homered off former Met Francisco Rodriguez with two out. However, Rodriguez rebounded to strike out Kirk Nieuwenhuis to end the game.
