Final Score: Mets 9, Diamondbacks 5 — Bats make up for Niese's shaky return

Jon Niese wasn't sharp in his return from the disabled list, but the Mets scored runs with ease and took the series from Arizona.

The Mets beat the Diamondbacks this afternoon in Arizona despite a so-so start by Jon Niese in his return from the disabled list. The Mets scored four times in the first inning, thanks in large part to a bases-clearing, three-run error by Paul Goldschmidt. Anthony Recker tacked on a run with a double after that, too.

Arizona scored a run in the bottom of the first on an Aaron Hill double, but an Omar Quintanilla single put the Mets back up by four in the third inning. In the bottom of the third, however, Niese served up a three-run home run to Hill.

The Mets' lead remained at one until Andrew Brown's pinch-hit, three-run home run in the seventh inning. Arizona got one run in the eighth, but the Mets' bullpen—David Aardsma, Scott Atchison, and LaTroy Hawkins—was mostly effective. And to top things off, Wilmer Flores hit his first big league home run, a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning against Heath Bell.
