Mets Daily Farm Report - 8/15/13: Nimmo Fiddled While Rome Burned

Catch up on all of yesterday’s minor league action from around the Mets farm system!

AAA - Las Vegas 51s (67-56)__________________________________

NEW ORLEANS 1, LAS VEGAS 8 (Box)

This game was all Las Vegas. From early on, they dominated. Matt Fox looked good, and the offense clicked on all cylinders. If not for D.J. Mitchell giving up a run in the 8th, we could have had a shut out here. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Lucas Duda and Travis d'Arnaud were the stand-outs here. The former and/or future Mets went a combined 5-8 with five runs scored, three RBI, a double, and home run, and an astounding six walks. d'Arnaud in particular- this was his second consecutive two-walk game, and his third in four. Combined with a few doubles and a home run, the back stop is hitting a cool .412/.600/.756 in his handful of games back since being sidelined on the DL.

AA - Binghamton Mets (76-47)_____________________________________

BINGHAMTON 4, READING 3 (Box)

The B-Mets and the Fightin' Phils matched each other tit-for-tat in the early going of the game. Reading scored a run in the bottom of the 1st, Binghamton scored a run in the top of the 2nd, and both teams pushed two runs across in the 3rd inning. The game would stay tied all the way until the 8th inning, when Darrell Ceciliani scored a Jose Reyes run: he singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an Alonzo Harris groundball. Adam Kolarek worked around a little bit of trouble in the 8th, and Jeff Walters in the 9th, but both relievers made the pitches that counted, and the B-Mets went on to win the ballgame, and the series. Even with Trenton's six-game winning streak, they remain 10.5 games behind Binghamton.

Hi-A - St. Lucie Mets (28-19 / 65-49)________________________________________

FORT MYERS 3, ST. LUCIE 4 (Box)

St. Lucie once again edges out Fort Myers by one run, though this time to the tune of 4-3, increasing their winning streak to a modest five games. The Miracle scored a run in the 1st off of Domingo Tapia, and another in the 3rd when Robbie Shields committed a throwing error that allowed J.D. Williams to get on base and be driven in with a sac fly. In the bottom of the 3rd, St. Lucie got on the board, as Shields made up for his error in the top of the inning by lacing a single and Charley Thurber driving him in. The score would stay 2-1 until the late innings. In the bottom of the 7th, Dustin Lawley hit his 25th home run of the year to tie the game. The Miracle would quickly regain the lead, as first baseman Dalton Hicks hit an RBI double that looked like was going to be the game. In the 9th, St. Lucie chained together four hits, all singles, against Tyler Jones - recently promoted to the FSL after posting a sub 2.00 ERA with the Cedar Rapids Kernels of the Midwest League- to win the ballgame.

If St. Lucie maintains their narrow lead in the Southern Division, this series will be a playoff preview, as the Fort Myer Miracle were the first half division winners.

Lo-A - Savannah Sand Gnats (25-23 / 68-49)__________________________________

SAVANNAH 2, ROME 3 (Box)

With the defeat at the hands of Rome, the Sand Gnats dropped the series, and have lost their last three in a row. Marcos Camarena pitched well enough, but the offense was stymied by the trio of Rome starter Jason Hursh and bullpen pieces Jose Lugo and Eric Pfisterer. Rome jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd, but Savannah tied the game scoring a run in the 3rd and a run in the 4th. Unfortunately, Rome scored a run of their own in the bottom of the 4th, and that turned out to be the ballgame. With his double, Brandon Nimmo has matched his entire July output, and is hitting a robust .364/.517/.500 in 13 games/44 at-bats, raising his season total to a very palatable .272/.389/.366.

Short-A - Brooklyn Cyclones (27-26)

HUDSON VALLEY 1, BROOKLYN 3 (Box)

The see-saw season continues. With their 3-1 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades, the Cyclones are once again over the .500 mark. Starter Dario Alvarez wasn't especially dominant, but he got the job done, allowing only one unearned run through six innings. The Renegades' one run came on a sac fly in the 4th inning, in which catcher Oscar Hernandez reached base on a ball that third baseman Juan Carlos Gamboa bungled. The Cyclones' bats stayed cool until the bottom of the 8th, when they scored three runs. Gavin Cecchini drove in a run with a sac fly, Ismael Tijerina scored on a wild pitch, and Matt Oberste got a groundball through the hole into left, scoring the Cyclones' final run. Akeel Morris, who was brought in the game in the 7th, pitched a 1-2-3 inning, striking out his final two batters.

Rk - Kingsport Mets (30-22)_____________________________

PRINCETON 6, KINGSPORT 7 (Box)

Kingsport didn't win this game so much as Princeton lost it. While neither side played all that well- Kingsport had three errors, themselves- the Princeton defense was particularly horrid, committing six errors, leading to a whopping seven six runs. Princeton Rays 3B/1B Leopoldo Correa committed three errors all by himself, and shortstop Spencer Edwards made two. Princeton had a narrow lead in the early going, but things fell apart for them in the 6th inning, when Kingsport scored five runs. A late run by the Rays actually tied the score, as they scored two runs in the 7th and one in the 8th, but with bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th, Jeff Diehl hit a sac fly that won the game.

    Star of the Night

    It was a bit tough tonight, since there were no real stand-out pitching performances and I had to look at hitters. Lucas Duda and Kirk Nieuwenhuis both had good nights at the plate, but I think Kirk's home run and runs driven in give him the edge.

    Goat of the Night

    Pretty much he entire Savannah offense can share the ignoble award tonight. Not only did they let Marcos Camarena- who pitched a decent game- down, but their lack of production prevented a rare complete system sweep. Nimmo and Pena get a pass, but because of Brandon's name, and the puns that can be made given that the Braves play in Rome...
