Phillies 6, Mets 2 — Dai-SNOOZE-ke Mat-SNOOZE-aka

The Mets fell to the Phillies, as Daisuke Matsuzaka was nearly as bad in his second start as he was in his first.

Mike Stobe

Daisuke Matsuzaka threw a ton of pitches (110 to be exact) over 4.1 arduous innings, as the Mets fell to the Phillies 6-2 on Wednesday evening. Matsuzaka worked around a lot of baserunners this evening and he loaded the bases on three separate occasions. He was able to work around those baserunners in the second and third innings but his Houdini act didn't work in the fifth. The Phillies would get a run off Matsuzaka in the fourth, not in a bases loaded situation, and then they got three more in the fifth. After Matsuzaka hit a batter with the bases loaded, Robert Carson came on and allowed a single to score two more. Carson also allowed a home run to Carlos Ruiz, the ninth home run he's allowed this year in 19.2 innings in the majors. Scott Atchison allowed the final run to score in the ninth.

The Mets offense somehow managed nine hits against Cole Hamels but were only able to get two runners across the plate, one on an Ike Davis RBI single and the other on an Andrew Brown RBI double.
