Eric Young Jr.'s dash home from second base on Juan Lagares' infield single in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Mets won 3-2. Young beat the throw home from first baseman Todd Helton, hopping up enthusiastically after sliding safely into home plate. Both Lagares and Young showed off their athleticism tonight; Lagares hit a two-run triple in the first inning and played strong defense, while Young made a fine diving catch in the sixth inning to end a Rockies bases-loaded threat in addition to his eighth-inning heroics.
Jenrry Mejia pitched well through five innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out seven. However, he faltered after home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez was struck in the jaw by a bunted ball and the game was delayed. When play resumed, Mejia allowed a solo home run to Charlie Blackmon, which tied the game 2-2. Mejia departed with the bases loaded and one out a few batters later. He was not as sharp after the prolonged delay and his velocity was down, but his final line of 5.1 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 7 strikeouts, and 2 walks was decent. Carlos Torres entered and finished the inning without allowing an inherited runner to score, with some help from the aforementioned diving play by Young.
LaTroy Hawkins pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close the game out, but not before allowing a pair of singles to make things interesting. Pinch hitter Yorvit "Norbit" Torrealba lined out to Ike Davis to end the game.
Wilmer Flores went 0-for-4 and made an error in his big-league debut. Ike went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two walks, and also made an error.
