Mets Morning News: Gee lead Rockies sweep, D'Arnaud promoted, Robinson statue vandalized

New York Mets related news and links for August 9, 2013

Jim McIsaac

The Mets defeated the Rockies yesterday to complete the series sweep. Dillon Gee continued his solid pitching of late, and the Mets got just enough out of the offense to hold on to a 2-1 win. Here's your haiku, and here's your box.

Travis D'Arnaud is getting closer to his inevitable big league debut, as he has been promoted to AAA Las Vegas. I'd imagine he''l spend the next three weeks there, before joining the Mets when rosters expand.

Rising Apple took a look at what the future holds for Lucas Duda, after a season in which he didn't impress as much as many expected.

A Bronze statue of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese that sits in front of MCU Park was vandalized recently, with no arrests having been made yet. Hopefully those responsible are caught soon, and punished accordingly. LaRroy Hawkins certainly didn't hold back when asked about the incident, and I'm glad he didn't.

Does anyone else have fond memories of a large man trying (and failing) with a water bottle at Citi Field recently? He spoke about the incident, and it wasn't his bottle.

We had gifs for you, featuring Matt Harvey and a mullet.

We looked at Wednesday night's minor league action, in which Wilfredo Tovar showed off his power while Domingo Tapia stunk up the joint.

Around Baseball

There were a pair of games featuring the NL East yesterday, featuring the Miami Marlins and the Phillies. The Marlins lost in extras, falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The other team in Pennsylvania also managed a win, smashing the Cubs 12-1. Chase Utley was so overjoyed with the victory that he signed an extension with the club. Michael Young and Jimmy Rollins also cleared waivers, and the Phils added Luis Encarnacion.

You don't get to see a position player striking out a relief pitcher all that often, and you should do so when you can.

Mark Reynolds was DFA'd, so there are loads of strikeouts available.

Those of you hoping the Mets would claim Alex Rios after he was placed on waivers, Texas beat the Mets to it, so we'll have to find someone else to play the outfield.
