Final Score: Mets 4, Phillies 3 — Tovar's 2 RBIs rub out Phils

Rookie Wilfredo Tovar rapped a clutch two-run single against Cliff Lee in the seventh to give the Mets a lead they would never relinquish, thus completing a three-game sweep.

A Kevin Frandsen RBI double gave the Phils an 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Mets scraped out the tying run against Cliff Lee in the top of the fourth when Eric Young singled, Wilmer Flores doubled, and Andrew Brown hit an run-scoring groundout. The score remained knotted at 1 until the bottom of the sixth, when Brown lost a Jimmy Rollins ball in the sun, setting the stage for a Dominic Brown RBI single.

Torres loaded the bases in that frame and it appeared the game was about to get away from him, but he allowed no more scoring, allowing the Mets a chance at a comeback in the top of the seventh. It began as Juan Lagares hit a one-out single, followed by an Anthony Recker double. The next batter, rookie Wlfredo Tovar, fell behind 0-2 against Lee but somehow lashed a single to left. Tovar's first major league hit drove in two runs when Dominic Brown misplayed the ball in left.

The Mets tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth on a Lagares RBI double. That would prove to be the difference, as the Phils scratched out a run in the bottom of the eighth but nought else, and threatened but did not score against Latroy Hawkins in the ninth.
