Mets Morning News: Reynolds heating up in the desert, Cardinals take Game 2

Your Monday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

Shortstop prospect Matt Reynolds is killing it with the Scottsdale Scorpions so far. Can he be a useful piece on the 2015 Mets?

Mets 360 says that Royals outfielder Norichika Aoki is an intriguing option for New York to target in free agency. He won't solve any power problems, but Aoki is good at walks, contact, and defense. In three major league seasons, he's accumulated 5.1 fWAR.

Around the Majors

While the football Giants were making me cry, the baseball version played a heck of a ballgame last night against the St. Louis Cardinals. San Francisco tied the game in the top of the ninth when Matt Duffy raced around to score from second base on a Trevor Rosenthal wild pitch. Kolten Wong answered for St. Louis with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the frame. The Cardinals won 5-4 to tie the NLCS at one game a piece.

Game 2 played more like a slugfest than a classic National League chess match.

Yadier Molina was unable to finish the game after leaving with a strained oblique in the sixth inning. Backup Tony Cruz was behind the plate for the Rosenthal wild pitch that nearly blew the game for St. Louis.

With Adam Wainwright not pitching so well in October, should he even make his scheduled Game 5 start?

While the Cardinals and Giants dust themselves off and book it for the west coast, the Orioles will try to somehow defeat the juggernaut Royals in Game 3 of the ALCS tonight.

On the other hand, we might be stuck with no baseball due to a Kansas City storm.

Around the NL East

Fish Stripes reviews the 2014 season of Casey McGehee.

The Good Phight looks to Korea for help. Also, Jonathan Papelbon on College GameDay! I'm more of an Ole Miss guy, but that bulldog sure is cute! Everyone from Mississippi now hates me.

Will the Nationals pick up the option on Denard Span?

Yesterday at AA

On this date in 1999, the Mets lost Game 2 of the NLCS to the Braves. In 2006, they lost the same game to the Cardinals.
