Meet the Mets
Josh Lewin has been recently re-hired as Mets radio announcer, and he gave a lot of credit to the fans in a note on his website. He also suggests an Opening Day meetup at McFadden's!
In light of Derek Jeter announcing his impending retirement, David Wright was quoted by the Post as saying he is jealous of the Yankee captain's championship success. This would be bigger news if Wright hadn't just signed a huge contract to stay in Queens.
Sandy Alderson told reporters that no, the Mets were not likely players for Stephen Drew, and that no, it wasn't because of payroll constraints. The GM could be fibbing about the payroll, but it's becoming increasingly clear that the front office doesn't see Drew as a huge upgrade over the current shortstop situation.
Whether or not Drew is eventually added, the Mets have spend a lot of money to improve the club this winter. "I think we've made a lot of progress," says Alderson.
The fantasy division of FanGraphs broke down the Mets' infield situation. Wilmer Flores is mentioned in the shortstop part of the discussion, which is kind of amusing to think about.
Around MLB
The 2013 Boston Red Sox were effective on offense thanks to their ability to take an insane amount of pitches. While this was often effective in wearing down Boston's opponents, it seems the greatest beneficiary was actually the team that those opponents played next.
The Nationals sent pitching prospect Nate Karns to Tampa Bay in exchange for Jose Lobaton and a pair of Rays prospects. Lobaton was said to be on the Mets' backup catcher radar.
Chad Gaudin was released from his minor league deal with the Phillies because he failed his physical.
The Orioles have agreed to a three-year deal with Korean right-handed pitcher Suk-min Yoon. There's no word yet on whether Yoon will work out of the rotation or the bullpen for Baltimore.
Ted Berg says that Derek Jeter is overrated. Hard to argue with that.
Proof that Jeter is overrated? This tweet in which Albert Pujols says that the Yankees shortstop is "pretty close to" Jesus (not the one that was traded for Michael Pineda last year).
Sad news: Former Met Jim Fregosi has been taken off of life support after suffering a stroke last weekend.
Yesterday at AA
Rob Castellano began his coutndown of the top 10 Mets prospects with a profile of left-handed pitcher Steven Matz.
The 2014 Season Preview continued with Chris McShane looking at Carlos Torres and Matthew Callan examining newcomer John Lannan.
The Mets Stat of the Day showed that Bobby Parnell knows how to get tough outs.
In addition to being Valentine's Day, February 14 is the anniversary of Omar Minaya signing Livan Hernandez and Jose Lima.
