The importance of the lead-off hitter has been well-chronicled. As has the Mets' inability to find production from that spot in in the order since Jose Reyes left the team. Yet, last season, the Mets' success didn't seem to hinge on production from the top of the lineup. The performance of Mets hitters batting first remained about the same—pretty mediocre—whether the Mets won or lost.
