Juan Lagares was removed from the Mets' game with an apparent hamstring injury in the seventh inning as the team played the Arizona Diamondbacks this evening. Lagares beat out a double play ball and remained at first base for a few pitches before Terry Collins and the Mets' training staff came out to check on him as he reached for his right hamstring.
Known for his elite defense in center field, Lagares was hitting .314/.345/.471 through 55 plate appearances this season, including the four trips to the plate he made tonight.
While the severity of his injury is not yet known, any extended delay would be a big blow for the Mets. While Chris Young, who had been out with a quad injury, is raking in Las Vegas on a rehab assignment, he's not eligible to come back from the disabled list until Friday. He figures to be the team's everyday center fielder if Lagares has to miss any significant amount of time.
