A Memorial Day victory was not in the cards, as the Mets fell to the Pirates 5-3. Things looked really good for them through 7 innings, as Jacob deGrom tossed 6.2 scoreless, albeit somewhat stressful innings, and Jeurys Familia struck out Andrew McCutchen to get deGrom out of a 7th inning jam.
Ahead 2-0 headed into the 8th, Scott Rice came on and allowed a pinch hit home run to Gaby Sanchez but got two outs before turning things over to Jose Valverde and Papa Grande allowed multiple baserunners and most importantly, the tying run. With a short pen, Valverde somehow was allowed to start the 9th inning and the Pirates got to him again for some more runs, ultimately turning a 2-0 lead into a 5-2 deficit. Lucas Duda's leadoff home run in the ninth was the final spark of life for the Mets and ultimately, this was just another ugly defeat.
