Final Score: Mets 4, Pirates 2 — Hell bent for leather

Despite wildness from Jon Niese and the Mets' bullpen, the Amazins eked out a victory over the Pirates, thanks to the bat of Juan Lagares and the gloves of nearly everyone.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

On an unseasonably steamy evening at Citi Field, the Mets took an early lead on a Bobby Abreu RBI single in the third and a Juan Lagares run-scoring double in the fourth against Edinson Volquez. An uncharacteristically wild Jon Niese benefited from some great defense behind him until the Pirates tied things up on a two-run single by Starling Marte in the top of the sixth, but the Mets stormed right back in the bottom half with RBIs from Lagares and Daniel Murphy. Mets fielders continued to flash the leather behind relievers Vic Black and Jenrry Mejia, who recorded a six-out save thanks to some more great plays

Oh, and 50 Cent threw the worst ceremonial first pitch in the history of time.

Full recap to come.
